Precision Turbo & Engine uses adjustable valves and precise engineering to perfect turbo technology
As Precision Turbo & Engine declares on their website, turbo lag is the enemy of all turbocharged vehicles. The challenge of every turbo-motor builder is to find that happy medium between “slop” off-of the line and overboost in the higher ranges, though this method of engine tuning is much simpler in theory than it is in practice.
Here is where Precision makes every stride possible to close the “gap.” Since 1987, Precision Turbo & Engine has manufactured units that utilize either a 39 or 46-mm wastegate, each unit featuring a black-anodized wastegate cap.
Each wastegate unit is optimal in that they feature adjustable blow-off valves, made adjustable so that the user, depending on the overall application, can adjust their turbo to boost in a way that it avoids leakage at one end of the powerband, while avoiding compressor surge at the other. According to Precision, their GReddy, cast and billet, aluminum-framed blow-offs provide the kind of pressure release and overall boost control that cannot be found in most piston-type valves, meaning that Precision Turbo’s GReddy valves can be adapted to a wider range of engine applications, ranging from mild street motors to heavy-tuned, race applications. Their Type RZ and Type R blow-off units are capable of running between a 100 to 450-horsepower range, both units featuring an adjustable spring-stiffness screw in two different sizes, making it possible to calibrate each turbo for either a street or track-motor application. Both units are also available for Japanese import motors.
Another point where Precision stands above the rest is in their use of CNC machining when designing their TO4E-style compressor cover, designed for the best performance and efficiency possible. Combined with the unit’s T31 turbine, each Precision turbocharger is capable of running on applications producing anywhere from 350 to 2500 horsepower.
With an overall capacity for boost and streetable horsepower management, Precision Turbo & Engine’s turbochargers, with their user-friendly adjustments and industrial-grade construction, are by far on the top of their market, and should prove to pave the way for the high-tech and small-displacement performance markets, I predict in the very near future.
